Microsoft Executive: AI Chatbots Must Learn to Ask for Help Instead of Making Up Answers

(AFP, San Francisco, 31st) Microsoft Vice President Vik Singh stated that generative AI tools will save businesses a lot of time and money, but the models must learn to acknowledge that they are not omniscient.

In an interview with AFP, Singh said, "What’s really missing right now is having a model raise its hand and say, ‘Hey, I’m not sure, I need help.’"

Since last year, Microsoft, Google, and their competitors have been rapidly launching generative AI applications like ChatGPT. These applications can generate various types of content on demand, giving users the illusion that they are all-knowing. Despite the progress, generative AI applications still experience "hallucinations" or make up answers.

This is a critical issue Microsoft’s leadership needs to address, as Singh’s corporate clients cannot afford for Microsoft’s AI systems to fail.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff pointed out this week that he has seen many customers grow increasingly frustrated with the gibberish produced by Microsoft’s AI-powered tool, Copilot.

Singh insisted that "really smart people" are trying to find ways for chatbots to admit "they don’t know the correct answer and seek help."
